Okay, it was actually closer to twice in three minutes, but the title just flows better this way.  I just got back from a quick run to Taco Bell and the liquor store at Monterey and Dunne.  This entire trip takes less than 15 minutes for me, including waiting in the drive-thru at Taco Bell.

As I’m waiting for my food at the window a drunk guy in his 20s starts wandering up the drive-thru driveway.   Ijust shake my head as I assume he’s going to try to order and I know that most drive-thrus won’t allow this.  Instead, as he gets up to my car he breathes his horrid beer breath in my face and asks if I can spare some change.  I turn him down and ease down the driveway, making sure he’s not getting in the way of my vehicle.

After making a U-turn at Dunne I pull in to the parking lot across the street to grab some smokes at the liquor store and as I return to my car I get panhandled again, by a totally different dunk twenty-something.

What is happening to our idyllic little semi-wealthy suburb?  In the four years I’ve lived here now I’ve never actually been panhandled before.  Sure, there has been the guy who plays his guitar in the Safeway and Nob Hill parking lots, but he’s more busker than bum.  There’s also my daughter’s favorite:  the guy who would occaisionally appear at the Nob Hill exits with his sign stating he needed $72 (or some such) for a bus ticket home.  Of course, the fact the he was there on and off for more than six-months is no indication that the sign is complete BS.

I don’t go out much late at night because part of my job is to be here overnight.  But I’ve got a new coworker covering Friday nights now, so when I got the munchies at 11:30pm on Friday night I headed up to Safeway at Tennant Station.  I had no idea that place was such a hot spot on Friday nights!

The only businesses open were Safeway and 24 Hour Fitness.  Oh, and the movie theaters still had a couple of films that hadn’t ended.  But I stopped counting cars in the parking lot at 50!  There were eight teenagers hanging out in front of Safeway and another four hanging out down by the ice cream parlor.   Two middle aged guys with laptops were occupying the tables in front of Safeway (it is an actual internet Hot Spot after all), and at least a dozen other miscellaneous folx were wandering various areas of the parking lot.

So, if you’re looking to meet someone on a Friday night around midnight I highly recommend Tennant Station.  Believe It … Or Not!

Greetings!

My name’s Aahz. I moved to Morgan Hill, CA from San Jose two years ago. Although I’ve traveled North America extensively and called many different locations home I was born and raised in San Jose, which is the 10th largest city in the US. So the transition to life in the relatively small town of Morgan Hill has been an interesting one.

I moved here to be closer to my daughter, Z, who lives with her mother in Gilroy (about 10 miles south) and take a job as a caregiver to developmentally disabled adults which gives me a lot of scheduling flexibility in addition to the ability to work entirely from home. This gives me plenty of time to both explore my new community and share my discoveries, joys and aggravations with all of you.
