Downtown Morgan Hill Ice Rink Cancelled
Having just recently started taking Zaira roller skating I was really looking forward to the proposed ice rink in downtown Morgan Hill. Unfortunately, a scant few weeks after the Morgan Hill Downtown Association (a private organization) received a $50,000 loan from the Morgan Hill Redevelopment Agency (a tax supported government organization) they have decided to not host the roller rink at all. Apparently they misunderstood they bid they received and it turns out the rink was going to cost much more to operate than anticipated.
They’re still accepting the tax funded loan, however, though they seem more confident they will now be able to pay it back. According to a joint letter from the association’s executive board: “In an effort to be fiscally responsible and make sure that the city loan is just that, a loan, and insure that we don’t incur costs above the loan, we determined that we could not take the risk at this time.“ So, apparently there was some doubt as to whether or not they were going to pay the tax payers back. I think that disturbs me even more than the loss of the skating rink.
