More Computer Self-Help: Determining File Types
Last week I wrote about the lack of local computer help here in Morgan Hill. The problem is obviously not getting any better and it reared its ugly head in my online life again this weekend.
I was looking for a particular application online and when I finally found it my computer kept kicking up errors. So, with my limited tech expertise, I went digging into the files included in my download to try and determine the problem. As I waded through all the geek speak I ran up against something I’d never encountered before: file extension lng. Since the file extension tells your computer what the file type is, it is rather important. So if it’s typo’d or corrupted then your program won’t work, even if the file itself is fine.
It turns out that LNG stands for “LanNGuage” and the file itself is essentially a text file with a little added support for the Acrobat Language Plug-in. But no one at our doomed Circuit City could tell me that. It only took a few seconds at the File Types blog to figure it out for myself, though. I have no idea who created or maintains this blog, nor do I see any way to reward them for their service. But I, for one, am thankful they are there, especially given the lack of local service options available in town.

It’s very important to know the file type of our computer error.I have encountered with such errors but very often. Anyways, the link you have provided on your post is very useful and informative about the file’s various types.
It can be a fair bit frustrating dealing with folks who you’d think would know how to resolve this. It’s great that we can find blogs and info sources for the most obscure problems.
In addition to my original comment, I have almost always been able to find good references online. The big G is our best friend.
