DirecTV’s Schizophrenic Bill Collectors

Late last month I had some problems with my bank account and had to cancel my debit card. It was a huge hassle, but South Valley National Bank has a wonderful staff and it was resolved with a minimum amount of hassle. Still, a few bills didn’t get paid because they were set to automatically draw from the cancelled debit card. DirecTV was amongst these.

Most of the affected companies dropped me a polite email and waited while I got my new card and made my payment. DirecTV, however started calling every night and asking me to pay over the phone. When I told them I wasn’t interested in paying over the phone I received silence in return. Yes, absolute silence. They simply didn’t know how to respond to “no, I don’t wish to pay tonight”.

I got my new card and paid the DirecTV on Friday, but today I received the bill pictured on the right and it’s even more customer unfriendly than either the website or the phone reps.  Check the highlighted spots: three notices to “PAY IMMEDIATELY” and one informing me “NOT TO PAY”.  Say what?

I actually canceled my DirecTV service many months ago, but my roommates still like it, so I have little choice in the matter.   Oh, how I wish there were some real options when it came to television.  It’s amazing how well genuine competition can improve customer service.
