Are You Ready For Tuesday’s Blackout?

Today we received a “Notice Of Planned Electric Service Interruption” from Pacific Gas & Electric.  In other words, a blackout has been scheduled for Tuesday, August 12, 2008 from 8:30am to 3:00pm.  I’m not sure how large an area is going to be shutdown next Tuesday, but this seems like a pretty drastic measure in our modern day.  One would think some massive changes are afoot.  However, the only explanation provided by PG&E is that they need the downtime to “Energize New Equipment”.  Say huh?  If that statement means something to you, please comment and explain it to me.

I suppose I could always call Ramona Martin, PG&Es Planned Outage Coordinator, to get my answer, but frankly, I’m pretty bothered by the fact that the people I pay to deliver my power have a Planned Outage Coordinator.  That means this person spends all of their time figuring out how to intentionally deprive their customers of a vitally needed service.  Again: Say huh?

Lucky for me I will not be working during the planned power outage so you’ll be able to find me lounging in the park reading the latest Repairman Jack novel from F. Paul Wilson. It will be interesting to see if the blackout brings a larger crowd than normal.
