Considering Charter Cable Internet Services
Since the government loves crushing the free market by granting monopolies to their pals we only have one choice of a cable provider here in Morgan Hill: Charter internet. And right now they have what looks to be a pretty good offer-
- 5Mbps downstream
- Only $14.9p per month for six months
- Plus a $25 gas card when you sign-up online
- 30-day money back guarantee
I must admit it looks pretty good given the problems with my DSL I mentioned earlier today. However, the offer has some serious flaws-
- Their advertisement states, in part, “Get the fastest and most reliable Internet speeds available“, but I currently have 8Mbps downstream with Earthlink, so that’s just misleading.
- They don’t mention that their 0.5Mbps upstream is only a quarter of the 2Mbps upstream I receive from my current DSL provider.
- The $14.99 per month price is for six months, but nowhere does the offer say what the price is after those six months or how long a contract one must sign in order to receive the offer.
- The standard $3/month cable modem leasing fee is not mentioned anywhere in the ad or the “complete offer details” link.
- Neither is the standard $50 installation fee.
So, I’m left wondering, just how much am I supposed to be paying? And for how long? Considering Charter’s been in the cable business for a few decades now they’re clearly hiding this information for some reason. And that makes me exceedingly uncomfortable. Why hide the actual contract until I’ve already signed up? Sorry folx, but I’m not biting.
Get some full disclosure and I’ll be happy to take another look.
