Revisiting The Morgan Hill Mervyns
Despite my earlier frustrations at the Mervyns in Morgan Hill I gave them another shot yesterday. Actually, I had little choice as one of my OCD clients insists on buying his clothes there. Sadly, nothing much has changed since my last visit.
The store was nearly empty when we arrived so at least we got to park up close without having to use the handicap placard. While the placard is extremely useful my client can walk, albeit slowly and unsteadily, so I prefer to leave the handicap parking spots for those who have even less mobility. Of course, I didn’t count on having to wander the entrie stor. But I’m getting ahead of myself…
We were looking for a specific brand and style of men’s pants and socks. The menswear department is easy enough to fins, but the signs for the Cambridge Classics slacks we were looking for were exceedingly difficult to read, causing us to have to actually walk up to each rack of khakis in order to determine which brand they were. As usual at this Mervyns there were no salespeople around to help us. We did manage to find them but the sizes were all mixed together and after spending a full 10 minutes looking for the right size we gave up and went with a different color. There’s no way to tell if they had any of the right siz ein the back or waiting to be shelved because despite there being several crts of clothing waiting to be put on the racks there was not a single employee within 50 yards of us the entire time.
In fact, when we went to pay for the clothes we had to make nearly a full loop of the store before locating someone at a “Customer Service” counter. With my client’s mobility issues this added an extra 20 minutes to our “quick” trip to the store. It also meant having to nurse his sore back for the rest of the afternoon.
I understand times are hard and employees are the single largest expense for any business, but things are getting out of hand at this Mervyns. It’s getting to the point that it will be quicker to drive the 30 miles up to the San Jose location.
